Texting feels free. That is what makes it expensive. When dispatch updates, job details, and handoffs all live in message threads, you are paying for it daily — in minutes, missed steps, and a manager's head that can never be off-duty.

The four costs nobody invoices you for

• The searching cost. Every “what's the gate code?” means a crew member scrolling a thread while on the clock. Five minutes here, eight minutes there — per crew, per day.
• The status cost. Texts do not have status, so status becomes a phone call: “Where are you at?” Managers report spending an hour-plus daily collecting information their system should simply show.
• The dependency cost. The thread lives on specific phones. When that person is sick, on vacation, or quits, the operation's memory leaves with them. Every new hire starts at zero.

What texts are still good for

To be fair: texting is great at being human. “Running 10 late,” “customer says thanks,” a photo of the finished bed of mulch for the group chat. Keep that. The failure mode is using texts as the system of record — the place where routes, requirements, and handoffs are supposed to live.

The replacement is not more software, it is visibility

Crews do not need another app to check. They need one place where the route, the stop notes, the materials, and the next action are simply visible — to the crew, dispatch, and the office at once. When status is visible, the calls stop on their own; nobody asks a question the screen already answers.
